Borobudur Marathon takes place on 15 November 2026 in Magelang. The key travel-planning detail is collecting the race pack before race day. Reaching the start isn't enough if your bib is still waiting to be collected. Fit your flight, accommodation and transfer around the organiser's instructions before finalising bookings. Organiser's rules

Date, location and distances

The start and finish are at Lumbini Park at Borobudur, in Magelang, Central Java. The General section of the 2026 event rules lists three distances:

Category Distance
Marathon 42.195 km
Half marathon 21.0975 km
Shorter race 10 km

As of 15 October 2026, we haven't confirmed remaining entries. A rules page or price list doesn't establish that a place is available for you. Before buying a flight specifically for the race, check your participation status in the official system and your registration confirmation email.

The suggestions below concern travel arrangements. They are editorial planning guidance, not an account of running the event or a published race timetable. We aren't supplying unverified start times, a race-pack collection address or prices for currently available offers.

Race-pack collection: when and by whom?

The rules exclude race-day collection and delivery by post. Registration confirmation and identification are required for collection. The organiser communicates collection times by official email. Arriving the day before is therefore only a provisional idea; the actual collection window may require a different plan.

A representative can collect through a request in the My Borobudur Marathon app, following the organiser's instructions. That is different from transferring the entry: selling or transferring bibs is prohibited. If someone will help you collect, confirm the procedure before paying for transport. Race-pack collection rules

In your travel notes, record the collection address, opening window, required documents and route from your accommodation. Check whether your arrival leaves room for both the transfer and a queue. Reaching the town just before collection closes provides too little margin.

Stay near Borobudur or use Yogyakarta as a base?

Compare two actual addresses, rather than town names alone. A room near Borobudur may reduce part of the pre-race journey, but you still need to check access and traffic arrangements. A Yogyakarta stay fits more easily with city sightseeing, while leaving you to arrange the journey to Magelang separately.

The organiser's FAQ announces shuttle buses from selected points in Magelang and Yogyakarta, with limited seats and details to follow. Don't assume a bus will stop at your hotel or that registration guarantees a seat. The FAQ also announces some road closures; check later updates for their exact scope.

Ask your host about departure arrangements, possible transport, luggage storage and check-out conditions. If you're counting on a shower after the race, ask about keeping the room later before booking it. A listing described as “for runners” doesn't explain which services the price actually includes.

A simple stay around 15 November

This table sets out the order of decisions, not event times. Fill in the details after receiving the collection and transport instructions.

Stage Arrange this Avoid a tight connection with
Before arrival Confirmed entry, pack collection and accommodation address A flight booked without a workable bib-collection plan
Collection day Collect the pack and check your departure point for race morning A full-day excursion returning at the last moment
15 November Travel using current instructions and agree where to meet afterwards Onward transport immediately after your estimated finish
Following day A flexible sightseeing plan or onward journey A fixed itinerary with no room to shorten visits

Leave the evening before the start for preparations and dinner. After finishing, you still have to meet your companion, collect luggage, eat and possibly check out. Buy onward train or flight tickets after accounting for all those stages, rather than using only your anticipated running time.

Keep the relevant confirmations together: entry, collection instructions, accommodation, booked transport and onward travel. If one detail changes, update the others that depend on it. A later collection slot, for example, may affect the room you need before the race without changing the rest of your Java route.

Travelling with a companion

Agree on a named meeting point on a map and a way to contact each other. “At the finish” may be too vague, and access to individual areas needs checking in organiser announcements. We aren't assuming companions can enter every area available to runners.

If your companion plans a separate outing, compare both routes with the announced traffic arrangements. Leave room to move the meeting time. Budget separately for accommodation, race transport, onward journeys and attraction tickets; don't automatically treat a race pack as a sightseeing package.

Borobudur, Prambanan and the rest of Java

Plan temple visits as a separate part of the trip. We aren't assuming that Borobudur closes because of the event or that a race bib replaces a temple ticket. Check admission rules and availability for your intended visit before purchasing.

On a short stay, choose one destination rather than touring several places after the finish. With more time, add a separate Yogyakarta day for a Malioboro walk, the Kraton or Taman Sari. Check visiting hours independently of the race programme. Our Borobudur and Prambanan ticket and transport guide provides a starting point.

For the next leg, see the Java train travel guide and the Java PDF guides. Keeping the race, sightseeing and onward journey as distinct parts makes it easier to change one without rebuilding the whole trip.
