Yogyakarta and temple map
Four pins help separate a city walk from the temple trips. Load the OpenStreetMap map or open an individual place in Google Maps.
Kraton / Kedhaton
The palace in central Yogyakarta. The pin marks the complex, not access to every section.
Tamansari
The former royal water complex. Combine a visit with a walk around the Kraton area.
Borobudur
A Buddhist monument with terraces and stupas. Set aside time for the journey and the particular visit option you choose when booking.
Prambanan
A Hindu temple complex east of Yogyakarta. Allow time for its tall stone towers and reliefs before moving on to your next stop.

For 2 days in Yogyakarta, choose the city and one temple. For 3 days, give the city, Borobudur and Prambanan a day each. That leaves room for meals and the journey back to your hotel. If you want both temples, the extra day is most useful here, instead of adding another destination to an already full schedule.
These are full days on the ground. An evening flight, baggage collection and hotel check-in do not make a sightseeing day. Below is a suggested order, a map and the decisions to make before paying for tickets. This is an editorial itinerary for a short stay, not a report from a new trip by Klaudia. Operator information was checked on 18 October 2026.
Choose the length of your stay
| Time available | Suggested plan | What you leave out |
|---|---|---|
| 2 full days | The city, then Borobudur or Prambanan | The second temple and an extra trip out of town |
| 3 full days | The city, Borobudur separately, Prambanan separately | Adding Merapi, caves and beaches to the same days |
| 2 days with a late arrival | An evening walk, then one main visit the following day | Treating the stay as if it included two full mornings |
For the shorter version, choose your temple before booking transport. If you want to explore Borobudur's terraces and stupas, check the ticket with access to the structure and its available session. If Prambanan's towers and wider complex interest you more, use your second day there. You do not have to buy both visits as a set.
The city day – palace, pools and Malioboro
Start with Kagungan Dalem Kedhaton, the part of Kraton Yogyakarta open to visitors. The palace still serves as the residence of the Sultan and royal family. Visit in the morning: the operator lists Tuesday–Sunday 08:30–14:30, with Monday closed. If your first day is Monday, move the palace to another morning. Kedhaton hours and visitor rules.
Wear sleeves and clothing that covers your legs. The operator does not allow shorts or short skirts, and hats must be removed inside the museum. Plan for this before leaving your room, especially if you were going to spend the rest of the day outdoors in lighter clothing.

Continue to Taman Sari, listed as Tamansari in the official booking service. The former royal pools and gardens are a separate visit. The operator lists daily 09:00–15:00. Check which sections are accessible when you arrive; an online photograph of an underground passage does not confirm that you can enter it during your visit. Tamansari operator information.
After the palace and pools, stop for lunch and a break. Then head towards Pasar Beringharjo and Malioboro for textiles, a walk and dinner. Visit any particular market stall or shop before your evening stroll and check its own hours. The street being lively does not mean the market is still trading.

There is no need to walk every link in the city day. Choose a short ride when heat, luggage or tired legs make it more useful. If you take a becak, agree the price and destination before setting off. Gudeg is one option for lunch; see what to eat in Yogyakarta for meal ideas. This itinerary does not repeat that article's price list.
The Borobudur day – book the session before the transfer
Choose the admission type and date before arranging hotel pickup. The official shop lists different products, including access to the temple structure and separate sunrise and sunset experiences. For the regular Temple Structure product, the operator lists structure access, a wristband, Upanat sandals and a guide. Check the visitor category and inclusions in your own basket. Official Borobudur tickets.
The operator recommends arriving 30–45 minutes before your session. This is time at the site, not the journey from Yogyakarta. Your pickup time needs to allow for the whole drive from the hotel and a traffic buffer. Avoid arranging a return that makes you watch the clock throughout the visit.
Send the driver the ticket name, admission time and confirmed meeting point. Agree whether they wait, where they collect you afterwards and what the fare includes. A quote for a ride “to Borobudur” leaves the return unresolved. Keep the evening in Yogyakarta free after you get back.

The Prambanan day – allow for the wider complex
Prambanan gets a separate day in the three-day version. In the two-day version, it can replace Borobudur. Decide which version you want before booking a tour that includes both temples: combining them changes the pace of the whole stay.
The ticket page lists Lumbung, Bubrah, Sewu and the Prambanan Museum alongside Prambanan itself. Look beyond the photograph of the main towers when planning your visit. Check which sections will be accessible on your date and choose how much you want to cover. A starting time is not the same as the last admission or closing time. Official Prambanan ticket inclusions.
Take water, a hat for the open grounds and comfortable shoes. Agree your return pickup point before entering. If you leave Yogyakarta by train afterwards, allow for collecting luggage and reaching the correct station as well. With an early departure, move the temple visit to the previous day.

Map and transport – save the right places
The map shows the palace, Tamansari and both temples. These are orientation pins, not a substitute for the entrance shown on your ticket or current road information. Save Pasar Beringharjo and Jalan Malioboro separately for your city walk.
If flying, check whether your ticket names Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), then choose the airport train or a road transfer to your accommodation. Look up transport for your arrival date and leave time to get out of the terminal. When travelling by rail, start with the exact station on your ticket. Our Java train guide covers planning the next leg; check current connections with KAI.
For accommodation, compare the Malioboro and Sosrowijayan area with Prawirotaman. Plot the actual hotel against your chosen stops and check luggage storage and late check-in. A neighbourhood name alone does not tell you how you will reach your room. This itinerary does not require renting a scooter.
Costs – what to price before booking
We do not give a single figure for a “day in Yogyakarta”. Paid admissions and out-of-town transfers are the main differences between these two versions. We could not verify the museums' current prices in their official shop during this update, while temple prices require selecting the actual ticket. An older guidebook figure is not a quote for your travel date.
| Item | Where to check the price | What else to check |
|---|---|---|
| Kedhaton and Tamansari | Each official museum page, its GlobalTix booking link or ticket counter | Correct museum, visitor category and date |
| Borobudur and Prambanan | The official InJourney ticket links above | Admission scope, session and number of visitors |
| Temple transfer | A quote for your hotel and date | Both directions, waiting, parking and pickup point |
| Accommodation | The chosen property's offer | Number of nights, taxes, breakfast and cancellation terms |
| Food and city rides | Current menus and an agreed fare before departure | Meal extras and the price of the whole journey |
Compare complete versions of the trip before looking for small savings. Leaving out one temple also removes a separate transfer. A low outbound fare does not complete the budget if you have not arranged the return.
Making Yogyakarta part of a longer Java trip
Open the free guide sample with a Java map and route planner to work on the next part of your journey. Select Yogyakarta and your next stops to see how many changes of base you are adding.
If you want a fuller treatment of the city and the route beyond it, Volume 1: East Java also covers Yogyakarta and its surroundings. It is relevant once you have chosen your temples and are connecting them with the rest of the island. Read the sample first to see whether the approach fits the trip you want.
Visiting for film? The separate JAFF Yogyakarta guide covers planning around the festival. A screening day replaces part of this itinerary; it is not another stop to add after both temples.
Information checked: 18 October 2026. The allocation of days is an editorial suggestion. Recheck museum hours, ticket inclusions and access before booking. All photographs are archival, with their dates and sources shown beside them.
FAQ
Are 2 days enough for Yogyakarta?
With 2 full days, spend one in the city and choose either Borobudur or Prambanan for the other. Allow 3 full days if you want a separate visit to each temple. A late arrival does not count as a sightseeing day.
What can I see in Yogyakarta in 3 days?
One option is day 1 for Kraton, Taman Sari and Malioboro, day 2 for Borobudur, and day 3 for Prambanan. Change the order if your city day falls on Monday: the Kedhaton operator lists it as closed then.
Are Kraton and Taman Sari open on Monday?
Checked on 18 October 2026: Kedhaton lists Tuesday–Sunday 08:30–14:30 and closes on Monday. Tamansari lists daily 09:00–15:00. Check the operator's notices for exceptions before visiting.
Do I need a scooter for this itinerary?
No. Split your 2–3 days between city walks and separately arranged temple transfers. Price each out-of-town journey in both directions; a pin on the map does not guarantee a car for the return trip.
