Is Mount Bromo open in September 2026?

Yes. TNBTS reopened the park on 20.08.2026 at 00:01 WIB through all five gates: Cemorolawang, Wonokitri, Jemplang, Coban Trisula and Senduro. The quota of 2,752 people per day is unchanged. No closure notice was issued up to 5.09.2026. The next planned closure is 8–9.12.2026.

Can you climb to the Bromo crater rim?

I'm not promising it. In its report of 4.09.2026 PVMBG keeps level II (Waspada) and a ban on entering within 1 km of the active crater; the rim platform and the 249 steps sit inside that radius. In December 2023, at the same level, TNBTS closed the steps. The rangers on site decide.

How much is the Bromo ticket in 2026?

A foreigner pays 255,000 IDR (~15.90 USD) per day, the same price on weekdays and weekends; Indonesians pay 54,000 IDR on a working day and 79,000 IDR on a day off (PP 36/2024, since 30.10.2024). You buy only online at bromotenggersemeru.id. Entering without a ticket means a fine of 5x the rate.

Did the Teletubbies savanna at Bromo burn?

Yes. The fire ran 3–15.08.2026 and covered 1,121.66 ha in total; the savanna was the main burned area and has been closed to tourists since 4.08. The Sea of Sand and Cemoro Lawang were not affected. On 28.08 a new fire broke out near Bukit Kingkong.

Bromo after the 2026 fire: what you'll see and won't

Bromo has been open since 20.08.2026: five gates, a 2,752-a-day quota, a 255,000 IDR ticket. The savanna burned (1,121.66 ha) and nobody will promise the crater rim.

Status as of 7.09.2026. Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is open. TNBTS let tourists back in on 20 August 2026 at 00:01 WIB, through all five gates: Cemorolawang (Probolinggo regency), Wonokitri (Pasuruan), Jemplang and Coban Trisula (Malang) and Senduro (Lumajang). The daily quota hasn't changed: 2,752 people. On the first day 1,086 people came, attendance then held at 80–90% of the quota, and between 20.08 and 5.09 no notice of another closure appeared. That's the good news. The rest of this post is caveats, because the Bromo you'll see this autumn is not the postcard one.

What burned and what didn't

The fire ran from 3 to 15 August 2026 (declared out on 14.08, with a flare-up at point P30 on 17.08), and the final area is 1,121.66 ha. The main burned area is the savanna, the one with Bukit Teletubbies, closed to tourists since 4.08. The fire zone also took in Penanjakan and Bukit Kingkong/Kedaluh. On 28.08 at 01:36 a new fire appeared "mendekati Bukit Kingkong" (approaching Bukit Kingkong), with flames heading towards the road to Penanjakan; there were no reports of it being put out and none of entry being closed. On 31.08 the Ministry of Forestry opened an arson investigation.

I was at Bromo in 2019. What I remember of the savanna is not a good description of that ground today, and I won't sell it to you as a green postcard. The grass is coming back and TNBTS is preparing seedlings of endemic species, but no source confirms that you can drive onto the savanna after 20.08. Ask your homestay or jeep driver the evening before and fix the route in writing, price included.

The crater rim: not promised

In its report of 4 September 2026 PVMBG keeps Bromo at level II, "Waspada", and recommends that tourists do not enter within 1 km of the active crater; it also warns of a phreatic eruption, sudden and without clear warning signs. The viewing platform on the rim and the 249 steps are inside that radius. That day white smoke was observed 50–100 m above the summit. The precedent you need to know: on 15.12.2023, at the same level, TNBTS physically closed the steps and posted rangers by them. Whether the steps are closed today, no source dated 2026 has confirmed either way. The rangers on site decide. Plan the morning so that sunrise over the caldera and the Sea of Sand are the goal, and the steps a bonus.

Tickets: the tariff and where to buy

The official tariff (PP 36/2024, in force since 30.10.2024) didn't move with the reopening:

Vehicles: motorbike 5,000 IDR, car 10,000 IDR. Insurance is included in the ticket (5,000 IDR for a foreigner). Entering without a ticket carries a fine of five times the rate.

You buy only online, at bromotenggersemeru.id; that's the address TNBTS named at the reopening on 19.08.2026. Nobody sells tickets at the gate, you show proof of purchase. Two address traps: bookingbromo.bromotenggersemeru.org, printed even in the park's own official tariff, has had no DNS record since 5.09.2026, and bromotenggersemeru.org hasn't been updated since 24.02.2025. The .id site blocks bots, so open it by hand in a browser; which dates are on sale you'll have to check yourself, because it couldn't be read remotely.

Since the reopening, campfires, cigarette butts and anything that could start a fire are banned, and you're required to report smoke.

Semeru and Ranu Kumbolo: closed since 26.08.2026

The Semeru trail was closed on 26.08.2026 after a fire in Blok Ranu Kembang, until further notice; Ranu Kumbolo too. 1,235 people in 162 groups were left holding permits; refunds and rebookings come only after the reopening (as of 31.08). Ranu Regulo, the lake by the Ranu Pani gate, stays open (entry 205,000 IDR for a foreigner). Volcanically Semeru sits at level III, "Siaga". No reopening notice by 5.09, and regardless of fires Semeru has a scheduled closure from 1 to 31.12.2026.

The next planned Bromo closure: 8–9.12.2026

Wulan Kapitu in the Tengger calendar: the park is closed from 8.12 (15:00) to 9.12 (23:59). According to the TNBTS schedule published in January 2026 (IDN Times, 6.01.2026) it's the only planned closure left this year. Confirm it on bromotenggersemeru.id before booking a room.

Two days before you go

Check whether a ticket for your date can be bought at bromotenggersemeru.id, and look at magma.esdm.go.id to see PVMBG hasn't raised the level above II. If the gate is shut, don't wait at it: move the day to Tumpak Sewu, Madakaripura or Ranu Regulo and come back to Bromo the next morning. East Java in the dry season can close from one day to the next; in 2026 the park lost 12 days (8–19 August), and Kawah Ijen was closed on 4 September until further notice.
